Your own economic survey
I read and listen to the various "experts" bemoaning the current economy of the United States. And yet, I like to do my own survey, as well.
Just after tax season, I love touching base with some accountant friends to get a real feel for the economy. The CPA's that are preparing tax returns each year, have a great view of our economic conditions of this country. They see a cross section of wage earners and businesses across a variety of industries.
In fact, I was suprised by their responses this year. With the exception of a few industry sectors (auto dealers and home builders, in particular) most firms and individuals had as good or better 2007, than 2006. Even Mom and Pop retail operations were doing okay.
Do your own survey. Our media is focused on the "MOST". They spotlight singers with the most talent, actors with the greatest looks, and famous people with the most outrageous personalities (Brittney Spears).
The business news media is probably guilty of the same. An economic forcaster that predicts "mild growth" or "economic stability" is not as entertaining to the audience as one that is more outrageous.
