The further irony of Berlin
I caught this on another Blog.
The Berlin Airlift of the Truman Administration was the result of the Soviet Union's attempt to cut off West Berlin from outside supplies - thus pressuring West Berlin to join the Soviet sphere.
It was considered impossible to supply a city of Berlin's size with air freight alone. But Harry Truman was adamant that there would be no capitulation, whatever the costs.
More remarkable is the fact, that many of Truman's key (left wing) advisors were advocating detente with the Soviets. The leading liberal of the day, Henry Wallace, advocated leaving Berlin to find common ground with the Soviets.
Retreat and capitulation. Does that sound familiar? The glare of history spotlights the idiocy of Wallace's position.
Unfortunately, it's this dustbin of history that the media refuses to reexamine.
