Morning observations

My next column for the Mattoon Paper is now available at:  www.jg-tc.com
It's about Michelle Obama.

Writing the column for the paper is a fun challenge.  The 8 pm (MST) submission deadline means that my column must be completed before the major speeches have even been delivered at the convention.

As you know, our vehicle is festooned with Republican Elephants.  Also, we are wearing "RepublicanReporter.com"
shirts.  A good friend in Effingham wagered me that we would receive more negative than positive response while in the Mile High City.  He's going to lose the bet.

As we drive the streets, we get lots of thumbs up, particularly from the cops.  Although, I must admit, we have received the alternative "middle fingered salute" from two or three random pedestrians.  And we did have one person actually spit on the hood of our car.  Of course, with the low humidity in Denver, most of the goober had evaporated before it landed.

The police are a visible presence throughout the Mile High city.  The cops we've talked to have expressed their disgust at the protesters.  By the way, the name "Mile High" comes from Denver's elevation, which is approximately one mile above sea level.  "Mile High" does not refer to the condition of the majority of protesters.  That's just a happy coincidence.

When people on the street, and at the convention ask about the Republican Reporter, I respond, "Every reporter, by their experiences in life, come to this convention with their own political leanings and views.  We are simply identifying our bias on the front end."  Again, it's been a positive response, resulting in some insightful conversations.

In last night's blog, I mentioned that the reporter next to me kept nodding in agreement with many of the speakers.   At the end of Michelle's speech, nearly the entire press gallery were on their feet and clapping wildly.  That was stunning to me.  But remember, I'm the only one offering a biased view from Denver.
