Saddleback

If the Republican Reporter could have an impact on one issue this election season, it would be this:

As I wrote in today's article for the Mattoon Journal Gazette (www.jg-tc.com), this election is incredibly unique.  For the first time in a long time, both parties are prepared to nominate non-traditional candidates from their ranks.  Obama is a relative newcomer to the Democrats, while McCain is a maverick within the Republicans.  As a result, the focus will move from one of party lines to a more thorough examination of the candidates and their positions.  (This was an astute observation made by a neighbor to the super secret elephant nest).

So here's my hope:  I believe the Saddleback debate, in which both candidates were individually asked the same questions -  without the presence of their opponent - is the best method for the future debates of this election cycle.

After all, our President doesn't have to provide answers in the Oval office while his opponent is standing next to him, ready to pounce.  And he doesn't have a studio audience in White House ready to applaud a particularly good sound bite.

Instead he makes decisions, as President, much like the Saddleback debate (although they did have an audience present).

Saddleback needs to be the standard for this debate season.  It provides the clearest view for the voter in this unique year.
