Obama has been unusually silent on the issue of the bailout for Detroit.  While he initially declared he wanted them to get $25 billion, he is certainly keeping a low profile on the issue.

I wonder how he balances his wish to bailout Detroit with the line from his nomination acceptance speech in which he stated, "each of us must do our part to make our homes and businesses more efficient."

If there is a more glaring example of business inefficiency than GM, Ford and Chrysler, I'm unaware of it.  GM workers are paid 95% of their compensation to sit at home and not work.  In many cases they are earning more than college professors. 

But Obama's statements regarding Detroit don't talk about efficiency, only about requiring the car companies to be greener in their product mix.

At current stock market value, the shareholders should simply hand the company over to the UAW, for a $5 billion note receivable, and let the UAW run the entire operation.  Frankly, the shareholders would be in better shape.  And the UAW would have the opportunity to finally exhibit their true business acumen.   

UPDATE: New Rasmussen Poll shows only a small minority of American's think a bailout for Detroit would be a good thing.  Maybe Americans are not as pro-union as the Democrats would like us to believe.
