One more election

As many are aware, the election of 2008, is not quite over.
On Tuesday, Georgians will return to the polls for the runoff election for the US Senate seat currently held by Saxby Chambliss.

              Saxby Chambliss

My family spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Georgia with my sister and her family.  Hence, we got a front row seat at tomorrow's election battle.

Chambliss failed to garner the necessary 50% of the vote, and under state rules, the top two vote getters have a runoff.

The polls look rather tight.  However, Chambliss has a 2% lead over his Democratic rival in most polls.
Another factor is turnout.  Georgia had a record turnout for the Presidential election.  Many pundits do not believe the populace will be as motivated to come out for this one race.

Ironically, even with high voter turnout, McCain still won Georgia, 52-47.  As a result, pundits think the lower voter turnout will favor Chambliss reelection bid.

The airwaves are, of course, filled with advertisements on both sides.  As the Minnesota race (Franken-Coleman) is still up in the air, and with Democrats now having 58 Senate seats, the stakes for the Georgia and Minnesota contests are high.

Radio ads on Saturday were hitting the Employee Free Choice Act (Card Check) very hard.  Frankly, I think they were putting out the educational message on card-check so they can rally the electorate, if the issue should come up before the new congress.

If Chambliss wins on Tuesday, there will be a sigh of relief among most Republicans (and probably a few Democrats, as well).
Candidly, I think Obama doesn't want a filibuster proof Senate.  Given his "superstar" status, he could make a trip down to Georgia, if he wanted to put the 60 vote majority in the bag for the Democrats.
