Heisman Trophy - another barrier broken
Over the weekend, The Heisman Trophy was awarded to Sam Bradford, Oklahoma's star quarterback.

Bradford's selection is historic, in that Sam is 1/16th Cherokee. He is the pride of the large Cherokee nation in Oklahoma. Even prior to his Heisman selection, Bradford was idolized the children of the numerous reservations that dot the Sooner landscape.
This caps a remarkable year of firsts.
Of course, Obama's victory as the first african-american president of the US was groundbreaking.
But there was one other historical event that didn't get too much press covereage.
Last week, Ahn "Joseph" Cao, a 41 year old vietnamese refugee was elected to Louisiana's 2nd congressional district.

Cao arrived on the US shores from Vietnam in the early 1970's. His father, a former S. Vietnam army member, was unable to leave. Hence, Cao shuffled between relatives homes, in the US, for years, until he finally earned his law degree in the early 90's. (By the way, it wasn't until 1991, that Cao and his siblings were reunited with their father).
Cao entered the race against infamous Democrat William Jefferson. The 9 term congressman for New Orleans was found to have $96,000 of unexplained money in his home freezer following Hurricane Katrina. Even so, the race was not considered winnable by most Republicans. In fact, little money was given to Cao's effort, it was seen as so unwinnable.
But win it he did. By more than 2,000 votes, Joseph Cao became the first Vietnamese-American to win a congressional seat. The diminutive Cao (he's only 5 foot 2 inches) won the seat the old fashioned way. He didn't have name recognition. He wasn't backed by the party elite.
He simply entered the race, and in eight short weeks convinced the citizens of New Orleans (the bastion of corruptness- now overtaken by Blago's Illinois) that he offered the best opportunity for returning integrity to Washington. And they agreed.
A truly amazing year!
