Spinning Blagojevich
I've been fascinated by the Democrats response to Governor Blagojevich's travails.
Most fascinating has been the two different, but popular paths that Democratic "talking heads" have been spouting on the news shows:
1. "Blago is nuts" - Many Chicago Democrats are only too happy to throw the Governor under the bus by pontificating on his mental condition. This is a savvy approach, to say the least. Already, Chicago psychiatrists have weighed in on Blago's mental condition. The more they can make the Governor appear to be a "lunatic" that operates outside reality, the less he appears to be the consummate insider that's simply part of the system. The Dems don't want a scrutiny of the system. An examination of Blago's mental health reduces the scrutiny of the sick condition of Illinois politics.
2. "Blago's actions are par for the course" - call this the "Bill Clinton tearing down his predecessors" strategy. When President Clinton was in the throes of the Monica scandal, surrogates were dispatched to recount past Presidential dalliances (to wit: Jefferson, FDR, JFK, LBJ). It was a clear attempt to save poor Bill's hide by "dirtying up" past Oval Office occupants.
Blago apologists (they are simply apologists, as I don't believe he has any surrogates remaining - short of some family members and assorted family pets) .....Blago apologists are on the news talking about "pay to play" as a matter of degrees. They suggest that "of course the Governor would look for political gain from such an important political appointment". They'll only admit that the Governor's efforts might have "stepped over the line". Of course that's akin to suggesting that the 9-11 terrorists stepped over the line by bringing down the World Trade Center, when they could just as easily have delivered a signed petition expressing their displeasure with America.
The bottom line is the Obama administration and Illinois Democrats want this debacle to go away as quickly as possible. They'll probably be disappointed.
Prosecutor Fitzgerald is the grand conductor of this large choral group. Between Reiko, Chris Kelly, Blagojevich, Emanuel, Jesse Jr., Mrs. Blagojevich and others (including the family pet) - there are any number of participants willing to sing. Fitzgerald gets to determine the order and the timing of each of the soloists. It won't be quick and it won't be pretty.

I hope all we hear from Chicago is a slow and painful drip drip drip.

Will Fitzgerald advance the investigation to the point that need be before the Obama administration fires all of the US Attorneys?

Great question. I don't think Obama would dare fire Fitz at this stage.

Terrific timing on Obama's part of his team's "internal investigation" of all this as well... he says sometime next week, so you can naturally expect it to be released on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day when no one is watching. I'd say some real close attention needs to be paid to Chief of Staff Rahm-bo when this comes out though.

You're forgetting that all important Obama defense: "I didn't know people around me were like that". Blago will just say that he didn't know what he was doing was illegal and it was all Harris's fault. I know the evidence against him is damning, but his lawyer is already spinning this case..."wiretaps were illegal".
