Obama and the challenge for the media

Media Conundrum

The media must be looking at themselves in the mirror and saying, "What now?"

For eight years they've had a wonderful whipping post in George Bush.  They were able to successfully stir up controversy with a host of real and imagined issues.  Their screaming headlines sold newspapers and ads.

Now Obama is in the White House.  Beating up on FORMER President George Bush now seems sort of heartless and cruel.  (It comes across as being a "Sore winner").

John Stewart's "Daily Show" (which some take as real news) even tried to make fun of Former VP Cheney a day after the inauguration. The joke fell completely flat.

So what are the media to do?  They face a declining readership and viewership (on a national level).  Again, CONTROVERSY makes the news.  Unless the media is willing to report on controversy, their decline will only steepen.

It conjures up the old phrase, "You've made the bed, so sleep in it."

BIDEN - Who is the Bully?

At the DNC Convention, Joe Biden spoke about how his mother told him to stand up to bullies by "punching them in the nose".  It seems that Joe Biden might see the world as lots of noses that need punching, whether a bully is attached or not.

Here's a clip from 1988, in which Biden tries to belittle a voter by telling him, "I have a higher IQ than you".  He goes on to tell the audience all of his qualifications - most of which were later found to be lies.  Here's the video

And then, the day after the inauguration, Biden made a cutting remark about Chief Justice Roberts.  You'll note in the video that Obama doesn't laugh at Biden's cut.  And, in fact, the President grabs Biden's elbow as if to say, "Okay, put the long knives away."  It's worth watching.

Remember, there's still 178 Republicans in the House and 41 in the Senate. The house membership can't really do much to stop legislation except for talking to the media (who will report it as whining), especially since Pelosi is changing the rules on minority party input on legislation. The Senate is not filibuster proof, but any time the GOP finds the guts to actually stand united (with or without McCain), the media will have a field day because they are blocking what their Messiah in the White House wants to do.
