"And here's our next crazy uncle from the attic....."
Well the stimulus bill (reported to provide nearly $13/week in tax relief to working families) is now completed.
Despite open derision of the package, from most economic and financial experts, the bill was HAMMERED through the "Attila the Hun" Congress of Pelosi and Reid. Ah, but the blowback from the public (most polls show Americans are opposed to the bill) is of deep concern to many in Congress.
So now the Democrats face their next big challenge. The Left fringe has a demanding agenda. The Left were put off for the first three weeks by the Obama administration that was pleading, "We have to get the economy fixed first, before we can tackle the other items." With the economy supposedly now "fixed", the left is banging on the door once again.
They are looking for passage of the following:
1. Freedom of Choice Act (basically expanding abortion to include infanticide)
2. Employee Free Choice Act (ie. Card Check)
3. Fairness Doctrine - using the power of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to insure that all broadcast media are providing equal time for differing opinions. The Left are demanding this legislation to insure that Air America (the bankrupt left wing network) gets as much air time as Rush Limbaugh.
While the Democrats have said they want all of these, they're not showing much proclivity to putting the bills up to a vote. In fact, they are starting to drag their feet.
Word from DC, is that the political powers are seriously concerned that any one of the above bills will create a firestorm that they can't overcome. A loss on these bills will be an embarrassment to their perceived power and control, while a huge dissapointment to their Left Wing supporters, who've invested so much time and money.
It appears that all three bills would be ruled unconstitutional by a likely court challenge, as well.
These bill's supporters are the "crazy uncles from the attic". The Democratic Leadership is trying to figure out how to keep them satisfied with out ever having to trot them out into America's Living Room.
My Grandmother used to say, "Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you what you are". Pelosi, Reid and Obama would prefer not to be stained by their less than admirable friendships.

Bob, I have to disagree. I don't think any of those proposed bills would fail under court challenge. Well, maybe the abortion one, but even that would be given even odds in Vegas. You have to remember that the Dems and their friends control the courts. The abortion proposal would depend on where it was challenged. The 9th district court in CA would approve it in a heartbeat. Likewise with CardCheck and a new Fairness Doctrine.

Brian,
I think the Supreme Court would cast a fairly hard eye at both Card Check and the Fairness Doctrine. Or at least I hope so...

Bob,
I hope you are right. I hope that Roberts has enough pull on the court to strike down those laws if they get passed. I would hope that they recognize that the secret ballot is pivotal to a free and open democracy.
