Effingham's Tea Party

Congratulations to Brian Millville, organizer of Effingham's Tax Day Protest!!  The rally, held at Lake Sara, occurred on a cool, beautiful evening.  With the lake as a backdrop, the speakers were illuminated by the setting sun.  And the crowd was unbelievable!  Several people were providing estimates for me (from counting cars, to counting people).  The figures range from 400-600.

A perspective on that number - Effingham County has a population of 30,000.  Based on the size of this group, if Cook County (pop. 5,000,000) held a similar rally, it would be comparable to nearly 100,000 people showing up.  Pretty darn impressive.

Let's go to the video! (click on the photo to see the video)
First, dressed in his colonial outfit, Brian gives some opening remarks.  It also contains a great crowd shot.

Next we heard from State Rep. David Reis.

Then, business owner and party leader Steve Donaldson offered some comments

I was a little late for this shot, but here are some people throwing tea into Lake Sara.

The crowd included a cross section of the area population.  From toddlers to an 81 year old WWII veteran who noted this was the first protest rally he ever attended.

The speeches were not about chastising one party or the other.  Even George W. Bush was criticized for his financial mismanagement.

And there were signs.......lots of hand-lettered signs.  Some of my favorites:
            "God only asks for 10%"
            "I'm not your ATM"
"Your Grandchildren owe China $10 Trillion"
            "2009 US Debt = 2009 Newborn Tax"

While the 2008 election featured lots of rallies, this had a different feel to it.  People have had enough.  Frightened should be the politician that supports tax increases or wasteful spending at the local, state or national level.

Again, congratulations to Brian Millville.  For this having been his first attempt at organizing a rally, he's set a very high standard for all future events!
