Effingham's Tea Party

Congratulations to Brian Millville, organizer of Effingham's Tax Day Protest!! The rally, held at Lake Sara, occurred on a cool, beautiful evening. With the lake as a backdrop, the speakers were illuminated by the setting sun. And the crowd was unbelievable! Several people were providing estimates for me (from counting cars, to counting people). The figures range from 400-600.
A perspective on that number - Effingham County has a population of 30,000. Based on the size of this group, if Cook County (pop. 5,000,000) held a similar rally, it would be comparable to nearly 100,000 people showing up. Pretty darn impressive.
Let's go to the video! (click on the photo to see the video)
First, dressed in his colonial outfit, Brian gives some opening remarks. It also contains a great crowd shot.

Next we heard from State Rep. David Reis.

Then, business owner and party leader Steve Donaldson offered some comments

I was a little late for this shot, but here are some people throwing tea into Lake Sara.

The crowd included a cross section of the area population. From toddlers to an 81 year old WWII veteran who noted this was the first protest rally he ever attended.
The speeches were not about chastising one party or the other. Even George W. Bush was criticized for his financial mismanagement.
And there were signs.......lots of hand-lettered signs. Some of my favorites:
"God only asks for 10%"
"I'm not your ATM"
"Your Grandchildren owe China $10 Trillion"
"2009 US Debt = 2009 Newborn Tax"
While the 2008 election featured lots of rallies, this had a different feel to it. People have had enough. Frightened should be the politician that supports tax increases or wasteful spending at the local, state or national level.
Again, congratulations to Brian Millville. For this having been his first attempt at organizing a rally, he's set a very high standard for all future events!
Just curious what kind of media coverage that you had down there for your rally. The event in Madison, WI drew about 5K people but was very much downplayed on the late newscasts - it was 3rd after a lame report on a treadmill (c.o.l.b.e.r.t) designed for space & a brief weather report - but of course the media's not biased are they?

Reporters were there from both the radio and newspaper. Radio coverage was nice. We'll see how the afternoon paper covers it.

Thanks Bob for the kind words. It was a great time and we had more people there than I ever thought would come. There were people as far away as Mt. Vernon and Palistine there. Thanks for helping get the word out there. I have to say that Bill Grimes at the EDN and Grep Sapp were both very kind and gave did some great articles/interviews about the event.

I drove from Arthur to attend because it was the only evening Tea Party that day any where in central Illinois. It was well worth the drive. We need to do this again and get more of our neighbors involved. This movement can not die. Our forefathers would not recognize our new government and it's irresponsibility.

Congrats for the successful event.

If you don't keep good records, you're probably not claiming all your allowable income tax deductions and credits. Set up a system now and use it all year.Which helps in financial success.

The sweet perfume of Liberty which once permeated the Halls of Congress and the White House is conspicuously missing. At one time a Patriot could walk through the halls of Congress enjoying the touch of Liberty and the rich pride of national ownership as a Citizen of this great land and but something has changed.......................

The majority of the people just went through with their daily lives and listened to what the Mainstream Media was telling and for the rest of them and they just didn't care. So now that we have The Obama admistration and in actuality Obama has been a Godsend...................

Tea Party Patriots Inc. ("TPP") is a non-partisan and non-profit social welfare organization dedicated to furthering the common good and general welfare of the people of the United States. TPP furthers this goal by educating the public and promoting the principles of fiscal responsibility and constitutionally limited government and free markets. The 'tea party' movement has driven out some GOP 'establishment and candidates. The big question is whether activists' picks can win in November and though that may not be what they care about most....

The public is invited to the 9-12 Tea Party, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday at the gazebo on the grounds of the old Effingham County Courthouse. Organizer Brian Milleville said the gathering will include concerned citizens from Clay and Cumberland counties.

The first Effingham Tax Day Tea Party is set for 6 p.m. April 15 at Lake Sara beach. Organizer Brian Milleville said the “party” is planned as a “civil protest.” “We’re conducting a civil protest against proposed tax increases and the increasing role of government in our society,” he said. “I mean, where is it in the Constitution where the president can fire the CEO of a company?” April 15 is the deadline for filing federal income taxes.
