Tipping Points
Two different tales, related over the weekend, indicate we've crossed a threshold in our society.
First, a family has employed a woman as their home assistant (cleaning, organizing, etc.) for nearly five years. The woman assistant just announced that she will be quitting. It's not because of pay, or working conditions. Rather, she only wants cash customers, and her current employer files all the LEGALLY required tax items on her behalf. The woman wants to avoid all income taxes and is willing to give up guaranteed, steady employment to get it.
A young man (I'll call him "Mike") lives in a major metropolitan area, has a roommate ("Phil") who has been out of work for approximately 4 months. Mike is in a management position, and has some job openings at his firm. He's offered Phil a job that pays $18/hour. Phil can use his existing computer and internet connection and perform the professional duties from home - at his convenience. And it's for a Fortune 100 firm. Phil thought about the offer for a week and said, "You know, I can actually make just as much from unemployment........So I think I'll pass."
So the woman would prefer to commit a crime, rather than pay taxes. While the man wants to simply be coddled by the system. As Margaret Thatcher one said, "Socialism works fine until you run out of other people's money."
the Mike/Phil story almost sounds like an urban legend - is there any way to verify the story? Either that or Phil is just an idiot since UC doesn't last forever & and as a single male has limited access to other social welfare sources when the UC runs out. What am I missing her?

Kathy,
Great question. I can vouch for both stories. In the first story, the family told me directly. Likewise, in the second story was told to me by "Mike".

Another thought - why would Phil even be eligible for UC if he refuses work or does that no longer apply? Since Mike knows that Phil is collecting UC doesn't he have an obligation to report that? Friend/roommate or not this reporting this is a responsibility that Mike has to his fellow employers.

Would you feel comfortable trying to sleep in an apartment with an individual who you had just turned in for unemployment fraud?

This is an unfortunate state of mind held by many. It is sad that we have attitudes like this and are not compelled to take personal responsibility to improve our wellbeing. It is simply
not wise to decline gainful employment in this economy.
It would be interesting to know if these individuals have health insurance or simply take the attitude that the government (courtesy of the tax paying citizens) should also provide that. If I were an employer these are not the kind of people I would want on my team.
