Tipping Points

Two different tales, related over the weekend, indicate we've crossed a threshold in our society.

First, a family has employed a woman as their home assistant (cleaning, organizing, etc.) for nearly five years.  The woman assistant just announced that she will be quitting.  It's not because of pay, or working conditions.  Rather, she only wants cash customers, and her current employer files all the LEGALLY required tax items on her behalf.  The woman wants to avoid all income taxes and is willing to give up guaranteed, steady employment to get it.

A young man (I'll call him "Mike") lives in a major metropolitan area,  has a roommate ("Phil") who has been out of work for approximately 4 months.  Mike is in a management position, and has some job openings at his firm.  He's offered Phil a job that pays $18/hour.  Phil can use his existing computer and internet connection and perform the professional duties from home - at his convenience.  And it's for a Fortune 100 firm.  Phil thought about the offer for a week and said, "You know, I can actually make just as much from unemployment........So I think I'll pass."

So the woman would prefer to commit a crime, rather than pay taxes.  While the man wants to simply be coddled by the system.  As Margaret Thatcher one said, "Socialism works fine until you run out of other people's money."
