In History 
   40 years ago, a man-created vehicle, loose from "the surly bonds of earth", defied gravity.  The flight, which ended in an infamous splash-down, forever changed the course of American History.  I'm referring, of course, to Chappaquiddick.   
The incident prevented the election of a second President Kennedy, and socialism was held at bay for, at least, another 40 years.
