Tea Party
Why is the left so worried about the Tea Party?
Initially, Democrats and leftists ridiculed the efforts of the Tea Party movement. Actually, that's wrong. When the Tea Party movement began, a little over a year ago, the main stream media chose to ignore the growing sense of outrage over the expansion of government activities. Then, the movement's growth flourished. UH OH!
How were people finding out about the Tea Party movement, if the media wasn't telling them about it? Of course, it came via the efforts of the internet and alternative media.
At that point, the media began to cover the activities, in an effort to discredit the movement. But why?
There's something unique about the tea party movement that scares the bejibbers out of the established political and media elite. And, It is this:
The tea party movement is one of the first national conservative movements......ever. Think of every march on Washington that's occurred. From the Equal Rights Amendment to the protests against Vietnam, virtually every national movement has come from the left (with the tacit blessing of the media).
The tea party movement is one of the first actions to come from the right. More importantly, the leaders and participants come from a cross section of America, and are not directed by any one entity. They simply share a common belief - that the size of government must be reigned in.
Tea Party supporters are tired of entrenched politicians and handouts to everyone (including themselves in the form of pensions, etc.) It's ironic that politicians that sustained their position by fanning the flames of class warfare, are now finding that they are viewed as the elite. And the flames that they lit, are now licking at their own heals.

Bob, I'm glad that you are so tuned in to the tea party movement. Like everyone else in the political realm, you claim to know 'what it is' they are upset about. Sure, they are upset about spending, they are also upset about results. I think they are mostly upset. Most of the country, aside from the very rich are upset. They have found some direction for their anger and confusion. Some have not found that direction. But the bottom line is that when the economy turns around and employment rises, the anger will subside. Or will change. I remember when everyone hated Clinton in 1994. By 2000, he had been impeached, and he would have won reelection to a third term if he could have run.

Bill, good point. I wish we had the budget surplus we had when Clinton was in office. I want to know where this Tea Party movement was when George W. Bush ran up huge budget deficits? I don't think they are so much against Government spending,(at least not when it benefits them) as they are upset with who is in control of the government.

Many were upset with the Republicans departure from the goals of 94' - the Contract with America - but that was mostly "insiders". Of course, as you point out, there were many in the party that simply turned their head the other way. They were wrong.
The magic of the Tea Party movement is that it's not been organized from the top down and it's pulled in a host of citizens that were never political before.
Finally, I find it interesting that the Tea Party movement is not about tearing down one political party, or another. It's not even about demonizing individuals. Rather, it's about focusing on the financial future of the country. You might consider them the Dave Ramsey for the national goverment.
The fiscal crisis playing out in Washington, is taking place in most communities, as well. It's a crisis that city managers were identifying more than 5 years ago. It's driven by entitlement spending in the form of pension and benefits that is simply unsustainable.
We can continually look back and point fingers. But the more critical issue is looking forward as to how we rein in the spending of government.
