Williston, ND
(Williston, North Dakota) It was nearly midnight, and here I was driving on a rutted, dusty road in the North Dakota countryside. This really wasn’t what I had envisioned when I decided to make a journey to Williston.
Long time readers of this blog have heard me extol the virtues of the Bakken formation in North Dakota. New technology has allowed oil companies to successfully retrieve the vast amount of oil deposits that are found nearly 10,000 feet below the rolling prairie’s surface. By some estimates, the area may contain more oil than the Middle East.
I recently made a trip to Williston and had a chance to learn first-hand of the impact that this windfall has had on the people of North Dakota. Over the next several days, I’ll offer insight from the open and friendly people that I met.

I opted to fly into Williston (driving would have been more than 1,200 miles). A connecting flight via Denver was the only way to the NorthWest corner of ND where the oil boom is in full swing. Heading to the region, I tried to imagine how this boom compared to other American windfalls. The California gold rush of the 1850’s, and the Texas Oil boom of the 1920’s came to mind. Just like the travelers that were making a beeline to those opportunities, I tried to keep my eyes open to this unique time in history.
Our Denver plane made a quick layover in Cheyenne Wyoming before flying on to Williston. As we touched down in Wyoming, the several travelers all reached for their smart phones to check emails and voice messages. I imagined the gold rush travelers of 1849 stopping at each train station and sending back telegraphs to their compatriots. After more than 150 years, I guess things haven’t changed that much. Technology and travel has just gotten faster. But not fast enough.
When I had first booked my flight to Williston, several weeks before, it was easy enough. The rental car was just as smooth. A small compact car was all I’d need. The trouble began as I sought accommodations. Hotwire.com (always a site for a good room rate) offered no options. No problem, I just moved onto Hotels.com. Uh oh. While they showed plenty of hotels in Williston, none offered rooms for the nights I needed. I began to get nervous. My nervousness was well founded. The first six hotels were solidly booked. (One clerk even giggled when I asked for availability. She said, “Sir, we don’t have an open room till Mid-August”). Without leaving Illinois, the aspects of the North Dakota boom were now hitting me in the face.
Okay. While I would have preferred a hotel, I guess I could settle on a Bed and Breakfast. I’d just make a quick call to the local tourism office and get their recommendation. They recommended I keep looking. Every B&B had been filled for months. WOW! This was getting serious. I was now wondering if the compact rental car had fold down seats (and could I bring a tent as a carry-on on the plane?).
In desperation, I called one more hotel. Yet another chuckled response, but the woman seemed sympathetic to my plight. If I really needed a place to stay, she had a friend with a farmhouse, several miles outside Williston, that took in renters. My initial reaction was, “WHAT!!! Are you kidding me? That sounds like the setting for a Stephen King plot. Move to a boom town buy a remote house and kill off inept renters one-by-one, without having to leave the comfort of her home.” I didn’t actually say those words. But I certainly thought it. Instead, I thanked the kind woman (or was she merely the gatekeeper for the serial killer?) and took down the farm house number. Several chuckling hotel clerks later, I screwed up the courage to call the farm house. The woman that answered the phone was Kathy. (Yes, I know Kathy Bates played the deranged lady in several movies, but I tried to put that out of my mind. Had her name been Morticia, I would have hung up immediately.)
Kathy seemed nice enough. She informed me that she had several rooms with a group of male renters using the basement (she didn’t say if they were dead or alive, and I didn’t ask). I could have an upstairs room. Frankly, at this point I was so desperate for sleeping accommodations, I decided t o take my chances with Kathy. Even if she slaughtered me, I’d die knowing that I’d succeeded in getting a room.
Kathy warned me that the farm house was six miles outside of town. Unfortunately, my late arriving plane meant I would be showing up after dark. Between her directions and mapquest.com, I was able to find the farmhouse lights twinkling against the dark night.
Kathy’s home offered two private rooms and two large rooms in the basement with several beds. The downstairs accomodations were occupied by a group out of Washington state that were starting a new trucking/excavating firm. Like many workers in the region, they’d come to Williston because of the lack of economic opportunity in their home state. While in North Dakota, I met workers from nearly every corner of the US. Most had left their family behind as they struggled to cover their mortgage on homes far, far away. All were friendly, and engaging. And they told me their personal stories of living through this incredible boom.
