Romney - everyone else just jumped the shark!

The 1970 hit TV comedy, "Happy Days' featured a cast of characters that included "the Fonz".  The biker, tough guy persona was a lead character.

As the show's popularity started to wane, the writers looked for new story lines.  In desperation, they crafted a tale that ended with The Fonz (having never water skied before) actually strapping on a pair of skis and jumping a cage filled with sharks!!  Jumping the Shark became a moniker for identifying when a TV show was on it's last legs.  In fact, TV GUIDE has an online site dedicated to identifying when a show has "jumped the shark".

The activity was brought to mind as I watched candidates chastising Mitt Romney for agreeing that firing people was a good idea.  Romney was referring to the idea that when people providing goods and services to his firm (insurance, banking and the like) were not performing, he would seek other vendors.  From Gingrich to Perry, all the other Republican candidates launched their critical salvos at Romney.

REALLY?

If we intend to transform government and its wild spending - there will necessarily have to be some firings.

Gingrich and the others, by their knee jerk reaction, have "jumped the shark".  Their campaigns and message have become desperate if they feel compelled to denigrate a free market system.

The media is portraying Romney's words as heartless and cruel.  And Romney seems inclined to try to walk back his words.  I think he should take the example of Jesse Ventura and embrace his words.

In 1999, then MN Governor Jesse Ventura was confronted by a single mother complaining about the lack of state assistance for her college tuition.  Jesse responded, "I don't want to seem hard-core, but why did you become a parent?" asked Jesse Ventura. "It takes two people to parent. Is it the government's job to make up for someone's mistake?"

The initial 24 hour media storm portrayed the Governor as heartless and cruel.  But then the voters started responding.  By a margin of 8-1, Minnesota voters agreed with the Governor.  The media scurried away.  Today it is difficult to find any reference to the dust-up.

Speak your mind Mr. Romney.  It's working for Governor Christie!
